Mount Usher Gardens

Home again! From a wonderful vacation in beautiful Ireland. What a lovely country it is, with its amazing greenery, charming architecture and pretty gardens. One of the best examples of all of the above must be the Mount Usher house and gardens.

Voted the best and most romantic Irish garden to visit, and one of Monty Don´s (and my) top favourites anywhere (and I dare say Monty Don has visited a few more gardens than I have!)

The gardens are a true Robinsonian jewel, with its naturalistic approach to planting and landscaping. "This is an art which does mend nature, change it rather; but the art itself is nature".

Robinson advocated using permanent planting rather than bedding plants, and believed in achieving an apparently informal garden experience by mixing the native and the exotic.

I spent hours wandering around the extensive gardens on the banks of the river Varty, admiring and dreaming. After which I was more than ready for a delicious lunch at the Avoca-run Garden Café.

If Mount Usher gardens are my top favourite garden anywhere, then Avoca must be my top favourite store anywhere! And the Avoca Greenhouse Garden Store is a case in point (I only wish I had a larger suitcase... but even so I managed to squeeze in a plant or two...)

But now I am back home again, ready to give a little bit of attention to my own plants, which seem to have doubled in size in my absence. Full of new energy and inspiration I can hardly wait (for the rain to stop and) to set to work!

Welcome home! Have a great weekend.

Lovely photos of an Irish garden. Isn't it funny how those who love gardens visit them all over the world?

Dear Mia!
Thank you for your wonderful pictures from Ireland! I haven`t never recogniced so many different "greens" in one garden. So, sometimes it seemes that it is a fortune to have a lot rain?
Greetings from Westfalia, Germany

Hello Mia, and many thanks for all the photos and comments from your trip to Ireland.

I wonder how different the climate of Ireland is from that of your home garden? Have many plants traveled back and forth from country to country over the centuries?

I think that your gardens are superb, so when you praise another gardener's results, that is praise indeed.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to our corner of the world, the photos are beautiful. I agree with you Avoca is one of the most lovely shops ever. Used to have one a mile from my home, sadly it was destroyed in a fire, sure do miss the yummy lunches my husband & i had there. Have a sweet weekend
